Manhattan Business Directory Statistics 2026

A dated look inside the Manhattan NYC directory dataset: 235,578 active listings on September 11, 2026, with 96.7% coordinate coverage, 90.2% review coverage and clear limitations on what directory records can prove about the real-world business population.

This is a directory snapshot, not a Manhattan business census

On September 11, 2026, Manhattan NYC contained 235,578 active business listings. That is a useful measure of the dataset we can build guides and discovery tools from, but it should not be interpreted as the number of unique operating establishments in Manhattan. Source duplication, stale records, category overlap and businesses that have changed status can all affect a directory dataset.

The purpose of this report is therefore narrower and more useful: show how complete the fields are inside the current active dataset, explain which signals are strong enough to support editorial products, and make the weaknesses visible before we build claims on top of them.

Location is the strongest broad coverage signal

Coordinates are present on 227,853 active listings, or 96.7% of the snapshot. That high coverage is why the site can safely apply hard geographic checks to Near Landmark pages and route steps. It does not mean every coordinate is independently verified on September 11; it means the field is present in the stored record.

Reviews and business-contact data are widely available

Review counts are present on 212,568 active records, or 90.2%. Phone numbers are present on 88.8%, gallery images on 83.2%, ratings on 76.2% and websites on 72.1%. These fields help editorial selection, but none should be treated as a permanent truth. A rating can change, a phone number can be reassigned and a gallery image can become outdated.

Operational data is thinner

Working-hours data is present on 57.6% of active records and reservation links on 50.1%. That difference is important. It is reasonable to create a late-night guide only when a selected business has both a late-night signal and stored after-midnight hours; it would be unsafe to generate late-night pages for the entire directory simply because half the records do not provide enough operating-hour evidence.

Review depth is concentrated in a minority of listings

Only 17.0% of active records have at least 100 reviews in this snapshot. The share falls to 2.6% at 1,000 reviews and 0.3% at 5,000 reviews. A high review threshold can therefore improve confidence for some Best Of or discovery products, but it also excludes many smaller or newer businesses. That is why Manhattan NYC uses review volume as one signal rather than an automatic ranking rule.

Raw categories are not a clean taxonomy

The active dataset contains 3,734 distinct non-empty raw category values. Some are combined labels rather than one normalized category, so this number should not be published as “3,734 types of Manhattan businesses.” Before category-density or market-share reporting, those raw values need normalization and duplicate handling. We are deliberately not publishing neighborhood market-share claims from this snapshot for the same reason: broad district tags are not a substitute for verified neighborhood boundaries.

What the dataset is already good enough to support

The strongest uses today are location-aware discovery, business-detail pages, curated neighborhood selections, coordinate-checked landmark pages and editorial shortlists where a human can review the underlying record. The dataset is less suitable for claims that require a complete census, precise market share, historical trend inference or guaranteed current opening status without additional verification.

Why publish these limitations?

Because proprietary data is only useful when readers can understand what was measured. Future Manhattan NYC data stories will keep a dated snapshot, publish their inclusion rules and state the main sources of uncertainty. If a question cannot be answered responsibly from the available fields, we will leave it unanswered rather than manufacture a ranking from incomplete data.

Methodology

The snapshot was generated directly from the production Django database on September 11, 2026 and includes records where `is_active=True`. Field coverage means the relevant stored field was non-null/non-empty at snapshot time: coordinates require both latitude and longitude; ratings and review counts require values above zero; working hours and gallery images require non-empty structured data; phone, website and reservation coverage require non-empty values. Review-depth thresholds count active records at 100+, 1,000+ and 5,000+ reviews. No attempt was made in this report to deduplicate source entities into a census of unique establishments, normalize all raw category strings, infer neighborhood boundaries or independently reverify every real-world business field.
