Restaurants Near The Metropolitan Museum of Art
A Met day can be exhausting before lunch even starts. These options stay close to the museum and separate quick Madison Avenue choices from meals worth walking farther south or into Central Park for.

Do not wait until museum fatigue decides lunch for you
The Met is large enough that “we'll eat when we're done” can turn into a late, tired search on Fifth Avenue. Decide before entering whether you want a quick break close to the museum or a proper meal after the galleries. That one choice is more useful than a long ranked list.
All selections below are within half a mile in a straight line from the Met's Fifth Avenue coordinates. The actual walk can be longer, especially for the Central Park Boathouse, because park paths do not follow the Manhattan street grid.
Madison Avenue is the easiest post-museum direction
Leaving the museum and walking east toward Madison Avenue puts several restaurants within a few blocks without committing you to a long walk. Sistina, Café Sabarsky, Serafina and Sant Ambroeus all fit that pattern at different levels of formality. This is the practical direction if the group is hungry now rather than interested in another attraction first.
Café Sabarsky also sits inside Neue Galerie, so it can make sense when your day already includes another museum on Fifth Avenue. Check current access and wait conditions rather than assuming a museum-adjacent cafe will be instant seating.
Central Park is a different route, not just another restaurant
The Central Park Boathouse is geographically close, but getting there means committing to park paths. Choose it because you want the park to become part of the day. It is not the efficient choice if your next stop is on Lexington Avenue or you need to catch a subway east of the museum.
After a long museum visit, reduce decisions
The Met can absorb several hours. A restaurant that keeps you moving in the same direction as your next destination is often a better choice than a marginally higher rating that sends you eight blocks the wrong way. The notes below are written around that practical tradeoff rather than a universal “best restaurant” claim.
Editor-selected options
Distance is calculated from the landmark coordinates, not from a broad Midtown or neighborhood label. Walking routes may differ.
Sistina
Just east of the museum on East 81st Street, Sistina is one of the closest sit-down options when you want a proper meal without extending the walk.
24 E 81st St New York, NY 10028
Café Sabarsky
Inside Neue Galerie at Fifth Avenue and 86th Street, this Austrian option pairs naturally with a Museum Mile day rather than a separate cross-town trip.
1048 5th Ave New York, NY 10028
Serafina Fabulous Pizza 79th (UES)
The Madison Avenue location is a straightforward choice for groups wanting familiar Italian food soon after leaving the museum.
1022 Madison Ave New York, NY 10075
Sant Ambroeus Madison
Farther south on Madison Avenue, this works best when your post-Met route is already heading downtown along the Upper East Side.
1000 Madison Ave New York, NY 10075
Central Park Boathouse
Choose the Boathouse when Central Park is part of the plan; the straight-line distance is short, but park paths make the real walking route longer.
EAST 72ND ST +, Center Dr, New York, NY 10021
Via Quadronno
On East 73rd Street, Via Quadronno is the farthest option in this shortlist and makes sense when your day is continuing south after the museum.
25 E 73rd St New York, NY 10021
