Hudson Square Neighborhood Guide

Hudson Square sits between SoHo, Greenwich Village and the Hudson River. Its identity comes from a mix of former industrial and commercial blocks, newer residential use, media and office buildings, the Fire Museum and direct access to Hudson River Park.

Hudson Square is a mixed-use district, not just the space between better-known neighborhoods

New York City's Zoning Resolution explicitly describes the Special Hudson Square District as supporting a mixed residential, commercial and industrial neighborhood. That mixed character is the useful starting point: large former manufacturing and office buildings share the area with newer residential uses, restaurants and smaller streets leading toward the Hudson.

Use the Fire Museum and Pier 40 as opposite anchors

The New York City Fire Museum gives the eastern side of the guide a substantial indoor stop. Pier 40 at Hudson River Park pulls the route west to the water. Moving between those two points shows the neighborhood better than simply walking through on the way from SoHo to the West Village.

King and Greenwich streets are useful for food and coffee

Houseman and Westville Hudson provide two distinct neighborhood meal formats without leaving the radius. The King Street Maman location works as a simple daytime coffee stop. Ear Inn adds an evening option in one of the area's older surviving streetscapes near the Hudson.

Know when the guide is borrowing from its neighbors

SoHo and Greenwich Village are close enough that a wide search radius quickly fills with famous restaurants and shops from those neighborhoods. This guide deliberately favors places around Hudson, Greenwich, King and Washington streets so Hudson Square keeps its own editorial identity.
