Battery Park City Neighborhood Guide
Battery Park City is a planned Lower Manhattan waterfront neighborhood built around a continuous public realm: the Hudson River esplanade, Rockefeller and Teardrop parks, Brookfield Place and residential streets west of the World Trade Center complex.

The waterfront plan is the easiest way to understand Battery Park City
Battery Park City is different from most Manhattan neighborhoods because its modern form comes from a planned 92-acre extension of the Lower West Side. The Battery Park City Authority describes the neighborhood as reclaimed land built after the decline of the old Hudson River piers, with a 1979 master plan that deliberately balanced commercial, residential, retail and public-space uses.
That history is visible on foot. Instead of starting with a single famous attraction, use the Hudson River edge and the parks as the organizing system. Rockefeller Park and Teardrop Park show the residential side of the neighborhood, while Brookfield Place concentrates shopping, food and the connection back toward the World Trade Center.
Walk north and south through the public spaces
Rockefeller Park is the strongest large green-space stop in the selected radius. Teardrop Park is smaller and more enclosed, and the Irish Hunger Memorial adds a very different landscape and memorial experience. These are not interchangeable park listings; together they explain why Battery Park City feels more park-connected than the blocks immediately east of West Street.
Brookfield Place is the practical indoor anchor
Brookfield Place works for shopping, weather cover and food in one stop. Le District and Tartinery at Hudson Eats make it easy to keep a meal or coffee inside the neighborhood rather than crossing east into the Financial District. Mezze on the River works when the waterfront setting is part of the meal.
Do not turn this into a Financial District guide
The 9/11 Memorial, Oculus and Wall Street are close, but they are not used here to pad the page. This guide stays focused on the planned waterfront neighborhood west of the World Trade Center. That makes it useful both as a destination and as a calmer extension of a broader Lower Manhattan day.
