Zipcar
About
Zipcar is a car-sharing service that pauses personal ownership while making a car available on the block you live on. This idea, now older than most of its customers, moves vehicles from reserved spots to where they’re needed next. The usual drill—mileage fees, fuel cards, insurance—still applies, but the sign-up process is done online long before first use.
To reach the hub in 200 Riverside Blvd, New York, NY 10023, hop off the 1-train at 72nd or slide in after parking at the garage on 69th. Reservations open hours ahead; the fleet includes compacts, SUVs, even vans for big jobs, all with Bluetooth and USB outlets already in place. Rates depend on length and time of day, while add-ons like extra drivers or bike racks are clicked on during booking.
Once the ride is locked in, your assigned license-plate number unlocks the door, and you have the usual two-hour grace period before a late fee kicks in. Refueling before returns is a must; otherwise a surcharge follows.
Call 866-494-PARK to add the cardless driver to the reservation, or view the map for step-by-step Zipcar directions ahead of time: get there without circling the same block twice.
