Woodlawn National Cemetery

Woodlawn National Cemetery belongs to a lineage of military cemeteries across the country. Graves honor veterans from every branch, their markers lined in quiet rows. Visitors come to reflect, to trace names they recognize, to place flowers at headstones older than a century. Some simply walk the paths, pausing where the light falls differently.

Find the entrance at 1825 Davis St, Elmira, NY 14901. A flagpole stands just inside the gate, its pole honed by time. Among the monuments, a small stone chapel marks the far eastern edge. Names of the fallen appear on bronze plaques mounted near a reflecting pool. Light reflects off the water when the sun stays clear.
