Voice 1

About

Another stone-tipped bench lines the pier; under the FDR’s shadow, Voice 1 sits where the river ticks against pilings. Three different sizes of sculptures share a concrete apron along the water’s edge, each piece leaning into the breeze that carries the East River’s salt. The work ranges from stacked Corten plates that read like a set of folded blueprints to a single Corten oak whose gnarled branches bear hollows for light and shadow to play through.

West Harlem Piers, at Marginal St. & W 132nd St in New York, NY 10027, places the studio where barge hulls used to kiss the dock. Around it, the piers stretch north toward the Hudson and south toward the bridge—location enough for a sculpture to take the punch of wind and still stay on its feet. Between river dredging shifts and sunset kayakers, the neighborhood feels like a shipyard with buildings instead of ships.

Call a human who can nudge a piece toward the crane: 646–859–XXXX. Head straight for the northernmost pier on any evening after five; the artwork reads best when the setting sun hits steel at a low angle. Grab directions to its spot on the map here. See you at water’s edge.
