Tense LLC
About
Tense LLC sits inside a narrow stretch of Hudson Street between two busier thoroughfares. Finding the studio means slipping past the corner bodega and the framed doors of a converted loft before spotting the unmarked entrance tucked beneath a fire escape. Once inside, performers work with live musicians on everything from ballet barre sequences to spoken-word choreography. Tense also offers session taping for dancers’ rehearsal footage, costume fittings in a partitioned corner, and one-on-one coaching for audition tapes.
Across the floor, the space adapts to improvisational theatre and hip-hop cyphers under the same roof. Dancers can reserve a mirrored wall for barre drills, while poets practice spoken-word deliveries against a stripped-back backdrop. A small PA system handles background tracks, and speakers can loop through the ceiling grid for surround playback. Clients drop in for drop-in sessions or sign up for a multi-week series; the floor plan reshapes each hour.
The building itself hides behind a brick façade that dates to the 1920s warehouse district. Foot traffic stays light on the side street, so parking is easiest on Hudson or Varick, then a two-block walk south. Call ahead to confirm if you need the freight elevator unlocked late in the evening.
