Jerome Park Reservoir
About
The lined East Tremont blocks slope downward toward a shimmer of blue. Jerome Park Reservoir sits at the valley’s lower edge, a rectangular body of water framed by Cyclone fencing. Built as part of the old Croton system, it is one of the Bronx’s rare large, open pieces of waterfront—visible from street level yet not commercialized.
Like many legacy reservoirs, it offers passive viewing rather than rentals or classes. Joggers circle the outer perimeter on weekdays, while anglers can be spotted along the fence line using collapsible rods. Birders scan skeletal tree limbs overhead for migrating warblers, and dog-walkers pause to let pups sniff the damp grass edges. Further up, shaded benches face the water, though there are no posted signs about picnicking.
Reach the reservoir from East 196th Street or Reservoir Avenue in the Fordham-Bronx Park corridor, part of Bronx, NY 10463. For directions or to plan a visit, dial 718-543-4800 during daylight hours only.
