Castle Rock Park

The park at Castle Rock is one long ridge walk separating the Highlands from the river towns. Castle Rock Park itself sits on the crest of that ridge, a modest plateau where kids scramble over glacial erratics the size of cars. Side paths slip into the hemlock groves below; the clearest trails follow the contour lines like penciled lines on a map. Trails end where the rock face drops into a shaded ravine, a cool retreat on heat-wave days.

Reach the entrance at 31 Wing and Wing in Garrison, NY 10524. Two finger-posts stand at the gate—one points up, one points down—giving even first-timers a reliable route. From the parking strip you can watch traffic on Route 9 below, a reminder this slice of woods is less than an hour from the Tappan Zee. In spring the forest floor glows with trout lilies; in October the oaks blur yellow across the horizon. Dogs on leashes share the path with families who pause to read the trail markers stenciled on tree trunks.

Small hikers set the pace. A favorite spur climbs gentle switchbacks to a lookout boulder where Hudson River boats look like model toys on a bright ribbon of water. Dirt jumps and short rock ledges keep bikes rolling for half an hour before they loop back. Picnic tables under thin maples offer quick shade, and a seasonal water fountain keeps bottles topped off. Even on summer weekends the ridge stays breezy enough to forget the valley heat.
